The Central Reserve Police Force ( CRPF) is the largest Indian Central Armed Police Force. It is under the direction by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of the Government of India. The main role of the CRPF is to aid the State and Union Territory in the conduct of police operations in order to maintain peace and order as well as fight insurgency. It was established in the form of the Crown Rep's police on 27 July 1939. Following Indian Independence, it was renamed its own Central Reserve Police Force on the passage of the CRPF Act on 28 December 1949.

In addition to law and order and counter-insurgency work in addition to this, the CRPF is playing a growing important role in India's general elections. This is particularly the case for that once proud state Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar and in the North East, where there's a lot of violence and turmoil. In the elections for Parliament in September 1999 the CRPF played a crucial role as security force. Of late, CRPF contingents are also being sent in UN missions.
